These photos were all taken on a single day in July of 2022 at the Marin County Fair in Northern California. The popularity of county fairs in the United States dates back to the early nineteenth century, and they continue to be places where some of the characteristics of American life – its infatuation with cheap thrills, its huckster capitalism, its sentimental populism, its dynamism and diversity – are on display.
Shot on a digital full frame camera, the images have been processed in a manner to reflect something of the environmental setting; not merely a place awash in sunshine, but suffering from prolonged drought.
